The article states and briefly reviews the problem of whether it is correct to interpret the

basic principles of pragmatism within the framework of R. Rorty's philosophy known as

“neopragmatism”. As it turns out, the fundamental characteristics of C. Peirce's doc-

trine, who was among the founders of the pragmatist philosophy, include criticism of var-

ious forms of apriorism, an evolutionary and naturalistic approach to analysing the na-

ture of cognition, acknowledgement of its social nature and of the idea of objective truth

(with certain elaborations). The "pragmatist maxim", however, began to be interpreted in

loose and simplified ways even in the works of C.S. Peirce's contemporaries W. James

and J. Dewey. R. Rorty's concepts are a vulgarisation of a number of W. James' and

J. Dewey's statements, directly contradicting the central tenets of C. Peirce's scientific

method doctrine.
