The article gives a detailed analysis of the sociophilosophical aspects of such complicat-

ed and ambiguous phenomenon as religious fundamentalism. We retrace the development

of this movement not in chronological order as different fundamentalism movements ap-

peared but as religious studies and political science comprehended fundamentalism as an

independent phenomenon. The issue examines the origin of religious fundamentalism in

the USA, the birth and the growth of Islamic fundamentalism movements and the funda-

mentalism development within other traditions. Its connection with politics and sociopo-

litical processes also is demonstrated in our research. Moreover, we explain the funda-

mentalism essence in the globalization process.

The article establishes understanding of

the fact that in general fundamentalism is not a synonym of traditionalism but one of

the

possible reactions of religious consciousness to the impetuous process of modernization.

Keywords:

religion, fundamentalism, Islam, Evangelical Church, philosophy of religion,

religious studies, modernization.
