Implementing an introductory training course in English

phonetics into the English language teaching programmes

at Technical Universities

The article considers and substantiates the necessity and possibility of making an Intro-

ductory Training Course in Phonetics part of the English Language Programmes at

technical universities; analyzes the challenges encountered by teachers of foreign lan-

guages when making students familiar with the fundamentals of Theoretical Phonetics

and putting the theoretical knowledge into practice; contains a brief overview of learning

aids and phonetic courses which might be partially used during in-class studies and stu-

dent self-training; offers an approach to mastering pronunciation and improving the

speech perception for the purpose of perfecting the students’ communication skills.
