The paper presents a retrospective review of the “biometrics” concept development and its evolution over 150 years based on analyzing domestic and foreign sources of the XIX–XXI centuries. It traces transformation from the scientific definition of the “life expectancy calculation” through “introduction of modern statistical methods in biology” to the “science of measuring the body individual characteristics. The “biometrics” concept origin was reviewed, as it was not previously mentioned in the Russian-language scientific literature. A generalized formulation of the biometrics meaning is proposed, thus maximizing its application.
