The all-Russian students Olympiad in mathematics aims to stimulate students to form deep theoretical knowledge, as well as practical skills of solving non-standard problems. The competition may include separate contests for students of the 1st, 2nd and senior years. The annual all-Russian students Olympiad in mathematics (see the official documents on the web site www.vso-mon.ru) is preceded in three stages: the 1st one is held in universities, the 2nd one takes place in regions, and the 3rd one is Russia-wide. At the present time, the 3rd stage takes place in four universities (in Novocherkassk, Irkutsk, Ufa and Yaroslavl). We compare and analyze organization of the competitions in these cities. We notice some organizational drawbacks and offer measures of optimization in some respects: selecting the problems, conditions of students' work, checking the solutions and the procedure of appeal.
