The study reveals certain threats to the existence of the Russian civilization, arising as a result of changes to the education system and cultural policies of contemporary Russia. We validate the statement that the system of education and state policy in the field of culture and language require relying on the ideas of a "standard of culture" and a "cultural standard" so as to conserve civilization specifics of Russia and employ them for the sake of developing the country. Subjugating the national education system to the demands of globalisation as part of the Bologna process and relying on competence formation discards the problem of nurturing a citizen who supports the value system of a particular civilization, without specifying any other institutions poised to solve this problem. Such policy of destroying the national education system and eroding cultural environment, presented as their development, is a threat to the security of the society and state under the conditions of increasing competition in the modern world.
