The paper considers the primary functions of modeling in philosophy and science: representational, heuristic, explanatory, demonstrative, pedagogical. The hierarchy of these functions is revealed, various ways of using models in scientific knowledge are demonstrated. The important heuristic role of external and internal analogies in applying models in scientific research is identified, as well as the relationship of functions with the completeness of the displayed information about the object of study.
