The paper analyses main reasons of the palace coup on March 11, 1801. Role of the English factor in those events, as well as participation of N.P. Panin in organizing conspiracy against Paul I, were considered. It is concluded that the palace coup was a political assassination committed largely in order to change not only the domestic political, but also the foreign policy of the Russian Empire.
