The article analyzes the reasons of the historical stereotypes interfering with friendly perception of modern Russia by West Europeans. It is concluded that multitude of the historical plots represents the anti-Russian phobia and simplifications, having no logical reasons. At the same time some of these stereotypes have a certain academic nature. The point is that the development patterns of one region (Russia) are mixed with another (the West) and general trends specific to the pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods are mixed with modern one.
