The paper considers motivation and semantic features in learning English by the 1st–3rd year Bachelor Program undergraduate students and the 1st–2nd year of the Master’s Program students at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University and by the 1st–2nd year students of the MGIMO — Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. The study used the O.V. Lipatova author’s questionnaire and the conversation method; the data obtained were subjected to statistical factor analysis. As a result, the hypothesis that today students are studying English mainly to get credits was not confirmed. Most of the students are learning English for work, and humanitarian students — for communication.
