This paper reviews linguistic and cultural competences required from a technical university graduate according to the local educational standards. The author outlines issues typically preventing students of Bauman MSTU from successfully mastering these competences and suggests a methodology for teaching a second language in a technical university. The said methodology takes into account psychological characteristics of students and relies upon information technology.
